Spring 2010: I was invited to visit the Blikopener (Eye opener) activity at the NSWAC Noutenhof centre in Breda.
Blikopener is a weekly activity for clients. Blikopener is an interactive discussion group, which talks about numerous subjects. Social and communication skills are triggered. The coach looks into subjects, and, in consultation with the clients, brings books, invites lecturers or brings a film to watch together. The coach will lead the discussion, asking for everyone's opinion and will try to involve the people as much as possible.
I was asked to come and tell something about my work as a fine art photographer. After showing my books and photography, we decided that perhaps we could make our own book together.
Clients listened, talked and posed for me, brought their own photos from private collection and coach Marieke wrote down their stories.
The result is a very special photobook, pure and honest, about what happens to you when (after an accident or illness) you become handicaped, and how to cope with this.
Clients share impressive stories and 'before' & 'after' pictures.
I was able to make my own beautiful portraits of all of them.
Together with coaches Anita and Marieke I proudly present this book, about the other side of society, how photos and photography can help.
